A Week With The FFA

Bryan R. | February 21, 2005

Wow! Have I had an awesome time with the FFA latly. I took a real cognizance of my surroundings and made some memories that will be with me the rest of my life...

Last Friday, the 11th, I went to the Longhorn Rodeo! I'd never been to a Rodeo before, and let me tell you, it isn't like any 'sport' you've seen before. Those cowboys have too truly be out of touch with reality too some extent LOL. I'm serious though. They risk their lives and well being for a one out of x chance of taking home a hefty wad of cash. It's obviously more than just a career, but more of a passion, for the people who participate in the sport of rodeo and bull fighting. I had a blast. It was exciting, loud, unpredictable, fast-paced, and truly southern! I would love to go again, and invite anyone who would like to give it a shot to come along. You honestly don't know if you're going to enjoy something until you try it; I learned that that night

Speaking of not knowing if you're going to enjoy something or not until you try it.... Last Wednesday a small chunk of Ryle's FFA chapter went to the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville. I will be up front with you... That had to one of the most torterous six consecutive hours in my life! I could write a whole paper on the stuff I saw and experienced there, but I wouldn't have enjoyed a second of it. I didn't even know I was going until the last minute. I spent about six hours on my feet looking at tons of 'alien' farm machinery that quickly seemed to blurr together as I wondered aimlessly throughout the mammoth building.

At first I was with my friend Bryan (yea, shut up), and some other kid. We skimmed the north wing for about two hours and were ready to go home LOL. It seemed like we had already seen really what there was too see. That all the other wings would be repetative... Which they were. On our trek to the east wing we ran into some of our fellow 'FFAers' from ryle. The batch of us hung around for about an hour then headed off for lunch. I decided to go off on my own to eat so I could have some time too myself. To my misfortune, I ended up eating lunch standing up because all the adults and small children claimed the tables... Every single one of them! By now it was one o' clock in the afternoon. Everyone was supposed to be gathered on the bus by four. Geesh!... I still had over three hours to kill. On this day I learned that I truly am a complete moron LOL. I managed to get seperated from the people I was with two times!

So after I finished forcing my greasy hotdog down I realized that now I had to somehow find either somebody I knew or a path back to the bus by the end of the day. Letting out a huge sigh I mosied off praying I would quickly run into a familar soul. Didn't take long before God's grace drifted over me as my eye caught Schmidty and few kids trudging head on towards me! Right then and there I muttered out loud, "Thanks God." Schmidt noticed me as well. "Hey there soldier... which way ya goin'? You can walk with us if you're not embarrased who you're seen with" He grinned. Chuckling I spurt out, "I think I'll take you up on that offer..."

Now Schmidty and his posse immensely enjoyed examining each piece of equipment, and asking questions on it, and all kinds of annoying, time consuming things! This in now way, shape, or form held my interest for very long. I soon found myself wondering off to adjascent booths and what not. Well it was only a matter of time before I turn around one time too find Schmidt out of site and myself astray in whatever place we were inside of LOL! Uh... That moment came way too soon in my opinion. By this point, being very frusterated with myself and the day in general, some old habits started manifesting again. I found myself using some language my mother probably wouldn't appreciate hearing out of me LOL. 'Effing' out God and Schmidt, my beady, slitted eyes frantically scanned the aisles. No luck... They were long gone...

"Shit" I muttered, dragging my feet, trying to pull myself back out onto the main drag. I freakin' wondered around for an hour and a half looking for someone I knew. I went to every wing except the north one... And that's only because I couldn't ever figure out how in the world to get there! Finally! After all that time navigating I literally stumbled accross a group of kids from Ryle. They graciously allowed me too cling too them for the rest of the day.

Once it was time to get back to the bus we all realized that we had no idea where we were or how to get back to the bus. The girls in our gang had since ran off. Conversing over our cell phones, the gals 'tried' to guide us out. The only problem is they would lead us to a random place, promising they would be there, and then giggle hysterically as we stood dumbfounded in the middle of 'la la land'! In the end they did't really help us and we had to make a mad dash for the bus out of a little side door near us.

Something I did enjoy that day was our dinner. We went to this really nice place named Tumbleweed They were'nt really preapared for 60+ people... which was kind of funny. Anyway... I had the best chicken sandwhich of my life. They've got awesome chips and wedge fries as well. It was cool. You should go there... It will really lift your spirits if you've had a crummy day! LOL!

OK, OK, LOL. You're probably tired of all this pessimistic (is that a word LOL?) talk huh? Well I guess there we're some positive things about the machine show:

  • The Dodge Exibit! Nobody at Ryle really likes Dodge... But I sure do!
  • Bragging Rights! I can tell people how I went to the national show!
  • Dinner! Again... Tumbleweed is awesome!
  • Magnets Galore! I stuffed tons of free magnets into my pockets that day lol!
  • The Omish! Geesh... There were lots of them there!
  • Cowboy Fashion! I've noticed that even hicks have certin styles of similar dress lol! I'll have to do a post on that sometime!
  • New Kentucky Logo! I got a chance to see Kentucky's new logo on action!
