Shut Up Times Square

Bryan R. | January 08, 2007

Congratulations kids, we've officially made it through the first week of 2007.

Of all the commercialized, over-hyped, misconstrewed holidays that dot the year of the Western calender, I must say that 'New Years' is the one I despise the most. Interesting, because of all the pathetic celebrations we partake in, New Years is the least commercialized.

Why do I find such agony in this holiday? That's not so easily answered; Though here goes nothing...

I see the new millenium so far to be that of some twisted, drawn-out, global verison of The Masque of the Red Death. It's as if every year the human population turns the planet into one giant masquerade ball for an evening, or dare I say, the whole span of the holiday season. Our politicians, and even spiritual leaders, are their own naïve and self destructive Prince Prosperos--bringing us down with them.

The ball in Times Square comes down and it's as if this nation, and half the world, halt for a moment and behind their drunken, plastered radiating optimism they say to themselves deep, deep down inside "Were're still here... Thank goodness for that at least"

Call me a pessamist, but I won't mask the state of the world. All I can contemplate on New Years, despite the buzzing party a few feet away from the couch I'm sprawled out on at Matt's, are the blues.

Is this the New Year or just another night?
Is this the new fear or just another fright?
Is this the new tear or just another desperation?

Year after year, nothing changes. People, and the planet with it, just keep upping the drama and ignorance. Everything is spirling downward and no politician or pastor can save us now.

Is this what they call "freedom"?
Is this what you call "pain"?
Is this what they call discontented fame?

Did I mention the excessive drama in society? And the crumbing of culture as a whole? I believe I did. What about misplaced values? The new millenium has done a mighty fine job of pushing those along. People need to realize...

It'll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in

Get it yet? It'll be a day just like this one when the world caves in. Let me say is again: It'll be a day like this one when the world caves in!

You're pushing till you're shoving
You bend until you break
Till you stand on the broken fields where our fathers lay

I'd really like the founding fathers to see the nation as it is now... But go ahead world, contuinue down your self destructive path. The "ebony clock" will strike one midnight sooner than you think, and before you realize what's happend, we won't have the energy or nerve to blindly celebrate.

What's there to look foward to in this new year? Absolutly nothing, that's what. Get real, folks... there's nothing to look foward to in the world anymore. I really wouldn't mind it if Times Square would just shut up one year--That'd be amazing.

It'll be a day like this one when the world caves in.

Peace.
